Best Rated Acid Reflux Wedge Pillow For Side Sleepers In 2021 – The Full MedCline Pillow Review

Does the Medcline Acid Reflux Wedge Pillow For Side Sleepers Really Offer Heartburn Relief?

We here Zenful Sleep have compiled a very detailed review on the MedCline Acid Reflux Wedge Pillow for side sleepers. Give it a read to see if this pillow is worth investing in.

After reading others’ reviews online, in my opinion, it is worth investing in. But you are open to making your own decision based on what you read here.

It’s a pillow that is meant for left side sleepers but can be used for the right side as well. NCBI studies have concluded that when we sleep on our left side, it’s beneficial to those of us who suffer from acid reflux issues.

Why Use Acid Reflux Wedge Pillow

Acid, when coming back up the esophagus, can cause unnecessary pain and anxiety of unforeseen health issues. These issues can be vomiting, difficulty swallowing, esophagitis, Barett’s esophagus, and strictures. In rase cases, it can also cause esophageal cancer.

As a person who suffers from acid reflux, and had a parent who passed away from esophagus/stomach cancer issues, I try my best to keep acid to a minimum.

I’m married to a woman of Indian nationality who loves to make spicy food. So having a wedge pillow makes it easier to eat acid inducing, but yummy food.

Most people are known to have acid reflux if they experience symptoms more than twice a week. If you are one of these individuals, then this review is for you.

What Is Acid Reflux?

Acid reflux, otherwise known as GERD, is an issue with digestion. The LES (lower esophageal sphincter), a ring of muscles between the esophagus and stomach, usually snug prevents acid from the stomach from creeping back up into the throat.

When you are eating or drinking, this muscle relaxes, so food or liquid can make its way down to the digestive tract. Once what you eaten or drank reaches the stomach, then the LES tightens back up. But people who have acid reflux, unfortunately, do not experience this, due to the muscle becoming weak or because it remains relaxed at all times.

The LES does not close properly; this brings up undigested food and other stomach acids back into the throat, which causes pain or heartburn. Common disturbers of sleep.

Although the condition is common in pregnant women or overweight people, people who have asthma or diabetes may also be affected.

If left untreated, it can lead to unwanted health issues, which may result in longterm health problems. Many people have been known to use antacids, prescribed medications, and even surgery to treat acid reflux.

When attempting surgery, many things can go wrong. I know because my wife has had cervical spinal surgeries where they had to cut through the front of her neck to get to the back. Scar tissues have now formed, which makes it hard for her to swallow.

Implementing the use of the acid reflux wedge pillow for side sleepers will help you sleep better by preventing the acid from making its way back up in your throat. The pillow is simple to use, it keeps your shoulders, head, and torso elevated, which then helps the stomach contents to remain below the LES.

Need To Know Medcline Wedge Pillow Details

This pillow is shaped like a wedge pillow meant for side sleepers. It has unique positioning for place your arm, so it is not receiving any weight on to it. The body pillow is long and rounded to provide a better side sleeping experience.

Many reviewers have commented that their acid reflux issues have significantly decreased. Most shared that it does take a week or so to get used to using the pillow.

The Uniqueness Of The Wedge Pillow

The uniqueness is from having a J-shaped body pillow, which is an additional inclusion to the wedge pillow. Meaning you can use it under your head for side sleeping to keep acid reflux at bay as well rest your leg over the pillow.

This pillow comes from high-grade and durable materials, has a medical-grade foam, and is finished off with soft memory foam for natural contouring. The foam in the pillow is shredded; it is easy for the user to maneuver the foam for a more comfortable sleep.

What I really want to hone in on is that the pillow is for left-side sleeping. As this is the side, digestion takes place. It helps to keep the acid below the esophagus, which then helps to prevent painful heartburn from taking place.

If you want to be able to sleep on all sides as well as your back, but still keep acid to a minimum, check out the post on wedge pillows for acid reflux.

Pregnant women are often known to suffer heartburn; this pillow is excellent for them.

The pillow has been clinically proven by five independent clinical trials, which have concluded the effectiveness of the pillow has helped with acid reflux, coughing, and nausea. These are the most common disruptions when trying to sleep at night.

You will receive maximum support as well as stay in place without sliding down. Because of the foam used in the top layer, it is also great for hot sleepers

One of my favorite thing about this pillow is that you can get your money back if your doctor states you need it for medical reasons. Most times, your insurance company will reimburse the money you spend on it.

Medcline Wedge Pillow Comfort Level

Compared to other wedge pillows, Medcline is reasonably comfortable. Side sleeping position is preferred by many. The pillow has quite an appreciation for that. It will also help you maintain alignment without causing unnecessary pain on your knees or back.

Although the pillow is for acid reflux, you will find yourself using it for various other reasons as well.  Such as when you are congested or have a stuffy nose. People have also been known to use it for sleep apnea. It keeps the head higher than the heart, which helps a person with apnea breathe easier.

One thing to take note of is that Medcline does not recommend this pillow for people who lower back or hip issues.

Overall Quality of the MedCline Wedge Pillow

The pillow is made in the USA and is clinically proven for use to prevent acid reflux. It is 80% Cotton/20% Polyester with a 100%  Polyester dimpled mesh. The incline is at a 15-20 degree angle, which is usually considered a proper slope to prevent acid from arising.

No harmful chemicals are in the making of the pillow; it is also hypoallergenic

When you receive the pillow, it may have a bit of smell due it’s packaging, but once left out for a few hours, it will go away.

Each piece of the pillow has a cover that is machine washable. This makes it easy to wash. You can also purchase more covers if desired at the MedCline website.

60 Day Trial Offer

Sometimes price can make a person hesitant in buying the pillow. But if you get a note from Doctor, you need the pillow; you can get your money reimbursed from your insurance provider.

But if this doesn’t offer you enough assurance, Medcline lets you try out the pillow for 60 days. This will give you enough time to decide on whether the pillow helps you or not.

If you decide to return the pillow, Medcline will take it back without questions asked. As well they will also pay for the return, but your refund will be 10% less than what you pay.

My Overall Conclusion

Medcline Acid Reflux wedge pillow for side sleepers is excellent for people who want to prevent future health problems. Doctors have medically approved the pillow incline angle, so you will not have to worry about your upper body being inclined too high.

This pillow offers support to those who want to get a good sleep at night without worrying about painful heartburn. It’s a comfortable wedge, which will contour around your head. The pillow has space for your arm to be out of the way when you are sleeping on your left side, which is the preferred side for most.

Due to the quality of the products used in the pillow, it comes at a higher price tag. But you can get reimbursed through your insurance company if your Doctor backs your need for the pillow.

When people start using the pillow, they may have an adjustment period, but once they get over that, sleeping comes with ease. Because it has shredded foam in it, you can adjust the pillow to suit your sleeping needs.

  1. I’m left sided in almost everything I do and I just realised whilst reading this article that I enjoy sleeping more when I’m using the left side. It being the side where digestion takes place was something that I didn’t even know, I guess there is so much I still have to learn, anyways I’m quite worried that i usually change sides even though i may use the left side more frequently, wouldn’t that be real uncomfortable  when you switch side to use the right one such that I’ll be forced to use the left always?

    • From reviewers who have used the pillow, it seems to be fairly comfortable and easy to switch sides.

  2. One of the things I always regard to as comfort and a rich lifestyle is getting a peaceful and happy sleep, without it the essence of night won’t be achieved. I always try whatever it takes to make sure I sleep peacefully. Medcpine wedge pillow is really nice and very effective, it’s the first time I’m Reading about it anyways. Sleeping with my back or face down have been one of the hardest thing I try doing when its time to sleep, since I’m so much used to sleeping on my side. However doing it with a regular pillow is quite not very convenient, but I have been managing. My husband can try it too as he often gets indigestion and his snoring disrupts his sleep. Maybe the medical aid will cover it.

Do you know what the stuffing on the inside is made of? Just making sure for reasons of allergies.

  9. I take really spicy foods as well but never heard about the issues with the esophagus and how it is related to a pillow. 10. This pillow looks brilliant and it may be just the thing I need, you see, I have trouble with acid, I do control it with Ranatidine anti-acid tablets, problem is, I have read and I’ve also been told that this medication could be harmful, so I do have some concerns about taking it, however, if this wedge pillow can cure my excess acid without the need of medication, I really do want one, I also regularly wake up with a numb arm, caused by the weight of my head on it, this wedge pillow has a brilliant area for my arm so that’s an added bonus, thanks for posting this.
