3 Best Bed Bug Proof Mattress Encasements For 2021

Best bed bug proof mattress encasements are the ones that will stop bugs and prevent water damage to your mattress

What Are Bed Bug Proof Mattress Encasements?

Mattress encasements are a six-sided full coverage shield that will protect your mattress from bugs as well as spilled liquid, urine, or night sweats. They are usually zippered to make sure that the whole mattress is safeguarded in one go. The encasements also have a stretch to them, which helps them to fit around the mattress.

The purpose of a mattress cover is designed to keep out allergens as well as protect a person from an asthmatic attack or eczema.

There are many other contaminants which affect our mattress in different ways, and they are:

  • Dust Mites – Dust mites are little bugs that get into our mattress and feed on our dead skin flakes. They leave behind droppings; some people have an allergic response when inhaling what these little bugs leave behind.
  • Dander – This is the dead skin that comes off your pets. Another food potential for dust mites. An allergy creating atmosphere.
  •  Stains – Urine often causes yellow staining on mattresses. When we sweat at night, that also gets soaked into our mattress, leaving behind a yellow residue. Spills can also cause damage to the mattress. But once you put a cover on it, the mattress is protected.

The bed bug proof mattress encasements will seal out bed bugs, dust mites, and any other allergens that exist in the air. Not only that but once the encasement is sealed, anything that may exist in the mattress will also suffocate. Having an anxiety-free sleep is something we all long for when little critters invade our space.

The mattress cover will ensure:

  • Protection against spills and accidents
  • Wick away moisture
  • Stop bacteria from growing
  • Temperature regulation to help keep you cool

The most effective type of bed bug proof encasement is the zippered one. You want to make sure that the zipper locks all the way, which will prevent insects and allergens from contaminating the mattress. Another thing that you want to take note of is that the fabric needs to be breathable, which will help to regulate body temperature.

Will Bed Bug Proof Mattress Encasements Work?

Mattress encasements do work. You have to make sure that they are correctly installed on your mattress. Most of them, as I said before come with a zipper and a velcro closing to make sure the zipper stays locked.

The encasement will completely cover your mattress while sealing it off to trap the bugs inside. Once the pests are caught, they are unable to feed, and they will eventually dehydrate or starve to death.

If for any reason, a bed bug gets on the encasement, they are very easy to spot and remove. By restricting the bed bugs movement, you are immobilizing them with the encasement.

Some people are not in a financial situation to change mattresses. The encasement will help to renew the longevity of their mattress. In the long run, you may be saving yourself some money by purchasing a bed bug proof encasement for your mattress.

The only thing you want to make sure is that the zipper on your encasement is bed bug proof, which means they can’t escape. Order the proper size for your mattress.

  1. Dear Eric,

That’s a nice post on best bed bug proof mattress encasements, quite informative.

I had not figured out how many possible allergens could be involved in a poorly maintained mattress but now I know better. I recently had one of my close relatives get an asthmatic attack and the whole family has not known what is the main allergen.

Now you have expanded my thinking because I thought all possible sources had been exhausted. But not the foam mattress. That must need be changed and a new type brought in- and an allergen-proof encasement be sought for.

Thanks a lot for that. Does SureGuard also come with a tiny size for infant cribs?

    • Allergens exist in all types of furniture, but they especially like to hide in beds, because of bed bugs and other such germs floating around.

Yes, the SafeGuard does come in crib size

  2. Oh these are some great products – useful indeed. I use mattress covers for the reasons you mention here in the post and am looking to replace a couple of them for now. I have grandkids with allergies, eczema in particular. Anything I can do to lesson their discomfort is important and therefore the mattress covers, as you say, work as a barrier keeping bedbugs away from their skin and therefore the irritaion they cause. So, a big thumbs up for sure!

    • Great that you found this information helpful. Thanks for stopping by.

  3. Hello Eric,

First off, I never knew that dust mites conducted themselves in the manner where they survive off of our dead skin cells. Though it’s gross how the dust mites work, it’s very real. Also, if you’re allergic to dust mites, you must watch your back. If they bite your back while you’re sleeping, they’ll make your back breakout severely. Now, touching base on the encasements. They’re brilliant because they’re a thick protective layer that zippers around your mattress before dust mites get the opportunity to ruin your mattress. I like the encasements features because it protects your mattress from spills or your toddler wetting the bed. Thanks, Eric, for the post, I’ll look into buying an encasement the next time I shop for a mattress to attain that extra protection.

When my little brother used to pee in bed mom used to put a plastic just above the matress and it did work but definitely wasn’t the sweet nights fory little guy. Anyways I’m quite worried about my feet,  I have cold feet at night wouldn’t thesea mattress covers be made of leather making the bed a bit cold than usual?
