  1. Hey Eric,

Great job on this post, I didn’t realize how many electric blankets are still on the market today. I used an electric blanket years ago, and I would imagine they have only gotten better from a design and comfort perspective. I remember the blanket I used being very thin and uncomfortable on my skin. After seeing some options available today, I see companies are paying more attention to the comfort aspect for consumers. I’m personally nervous about safety, I’m curious if you have heard anything about fires which have started as a result of these blankets. Thanks again fr the wonderful information.

    Best regards,

    Jefrey M.

    • So long as you pay attention to not letting your blanket overheat and avoid broken electrical conductors, the blanket should not catch on fire. Another thing is to make sure to pay attention that when you washing your blanket you on how to get from all electrical gadgets.

  2. Thank you for taking the time to deliver such a detailed post.  I’m a big fan of electric blankets and I have noticed they have advanced over the years.  I would like to say I own and prefer they under blanket, compared to the over blanket.  I’ve had a good look through all the various types you have reviewed, with a view to finding a model that has 2 controllers that doesn’t get in the way.  I always find that my elbows often find them.  Which model would you recommend?  If you have not listed one, could you please advise me.

    • All of these electric blankets can be used under the blanket. But if you’re looking for something that you can lay on than Sunbeam has a product called Sunbeam heated mattress. May be worth looking into.

  3. Thank you for your post. It is a timely article for me. I live in New York and it is getting cold very soon. I am thinking about how to keep warm in the night. We have big house and it is not economical to heat the entire house with comfortable temperature.

Here comes your idea that we just need to keep our bed warm in the sleeping hours. I like your suggestions on how to purchase a heated blanket:

    – Never buy a used electric blanket
    – The cord will not be a tripping hazard
    – Always follow manufacturer instructions for use and care

You are absolutely right that safety is always the number one priority and your suggestions ensure that the heated blankets are safe.

    • Great, hope you find the perfect electric blanket. Thanks for stopping by.

  4. My mother was actually looking at second hand electric blankets on Gumtree the other night, and I said I’d check out the pros etc first – glad I did now! (the first paragraph of your article put us right!).

Could I ask what the main problem is with purchasing second hand?

Is it because the item could be faulty/dangerous due to improper use?

    • Most people only get rid of their electric blankets if they can’t return them. The blankets either come with a lifetime warranty or 5-10 year warranty. That should be the first giveaway, why couldn’t the blanket be returned. What went so wrong that the manufacturer didn’t take it back or exchange it? Next, you are right; it could be faulty or dangerous.
