Controlling dreams in your sleep is not as hard as some think. Nor does it cause any harm as you are undergoing the dream; instead, you will be in control at all times.

Why Should Learn To Control Your Dreams

People who learn to control their dreams are better at everyday tasks during the daytime. These people become problem solvers; resolving a problem comes to them at night like the lightbulb moment.

At the University of Lincoln psychologist, Patrick Bourke tested 68 study participants – 20 of those individuals experienced lucid dreaming often. In his study, he learned that frequent lucid dreamers were better able to perform tasks then who occasionally or rarely experienced this way of being able to control their dream.

A person who learns to control their dreams through lucid dreaming develops their cognitive skills; this then spills into their daily lives.

What Is Lucid Dreaming

Lucid dreaming is when you become self-aware during a dream state. The sleeper knows that they are asleep, but are also conscious when the dream takes place.

Most times, the person experiencing a Lucid dream will gain control over their way of dreaming. This is when a person will experience flying, running fast, or meeting someone long gone. Conversations in which an individual may have a hard time in real life become much more comfortable in this dream state.

At one time, I thought controlling my dreams by Lucid dreaming meant it was evil. As a child, I grew up believing that if I left my body, which never happens during Lucid dreaming, someone else would take over.

This is the main fear of individuals who want to experience this way of dreaming. But no one can take over your body, because all you are doing is controlling your dream.

·       Keep A Dream Journal

Writing in a dream journal will force you to remember your dreams, which will make it easier to control them if you. When you recall your dreams, it reinforces your memory. The more recall you do, the better your conscious becomes at remembering your dreams.

The method of keeping a dream journal will also get your brain acquainted with the dream world. This is a powerful way of letting your conscious know that your dreams matter. The more connection you create with your dream world and mind, the better chance you will have to control dreams in your sleep.

What often happens when lucid dreaming is people get scared and then pop-out before they can start controlling their dream due to unforeseen anxiety. An anxiety blanket will help keep you feeling safe; it will keep you weighted down so that you don’t move, which is often a reason why people come out of Lucid dreaming.

By performing a reality check, you can let yourself know that you’re in a dream state. This can happen by you pressing your palms together to see if they go through or not. In a dream state, they would go through, while awake, you know that they would not.

This is a sure way into the world of Lucid dreaming where you can control your dreams. Many people find that sleep paralysis can be a scary process; if you relax and allow yourself to start controlling what is happening during sleep paralysis, you’ll be able to move onto the next state to let your dreams take you where you wanted to go.

·       Incorporate the Way To Bed Technique

The way back to bed or otherwise known as WBTB is a simple way to induce lucid dreaming, allowing you to move into being able to control your dream. Beginners can use this method.

What you’ll need to do is before going to sleep, set your alarm clock up to wake you in 4 to 5 hours. Upon waking, get out of bed and do something which requires mental effort; this would be an excellent time to use your sleeping journal. Try to stay awake for at least 20 minutes; the longer you can stay awake, the easier it will be. As you start to fall back asleep, see what you would like to dream about. You might not realize it, but you could easily be in your dream world once the connection has been made with the brain.

This method works because you are letting your subconscious know what kind of experience you want to happen. Your subconscious is a direct connection to your dream world. It is the part of us that alerts us and stores our daily experiences.

As you are falling asleep, repeat to your subconscious that you will be able to control your dream, it will often lead it to happen. Once this experience is stored, your conscious will have no problem recalling, which means controlling dreams in your sleep will start to happen often.

There was a study done on vitamin B6 supplements back in 2002, where it was discovered that individuals who took vitamin B6 supplements were able to recall their dreams vividly. Once again, as you can see, vivid dream recall leads into Lucid dreaming where you will be able to control your dreams. By having dream recall, they were able to reinforce their brain on the connection of Lucid dreaming.

Are There Any Dangers Of Lucid Dreaming

Contrary to popular belief, you will not drown in your sleep. There are so many misconceptions out there that people have become afraid to experience this way of sleeping and dreaming. Lucid dreaming has been studied scientifically, and scientists have explained it as a way of hybrid sleeping – it’s a state of wakefulness and REM.

Some have even explained that because you’re in control of your dream, you sleep deeper and wake up better rested and ready to take on your day.

I have been able to Lucid dream since I was a child. Like I said earlier, I was afraid, and I let the fear control me rather than control my dreams. But once I learned of what could happen if I were to control my dreams, the feeling of exhilaration was real.

Being able to travel where I wanted to travel, talking to anyone has become one of my most positive dreaming experiences.

  3. Hello there! Thank you very much for sharing this article on controlling dreams in your sleep. It’s a very detailed article and contains valuable information. I feel like when I lucid dream I’m going to be really scared because most of my dreams are scary so been self aware would be really scary. I would try it tho, I want to have a control of my dream so regardless of the fear I’ll feel I’ll still try it. I’ll keep a dream journal and do the other things listed out and maybe very soon I’ll over come too. Thank you very much

  4. This is definitely on a whole new level for me because I have never heard about this before. Though I know mastery of hypnosis and all can do wonders but never could I have imagined dreams being controlled. I thought dreams were way out of our control and it only cones to us naturally. This is an act that interests me and one I would be willing to invest the time and energy to learn

    In my house, there is sometimes the issue of not wanting to sleep because of the fear of dreaming from my little daughter and severally I have had to sleep in her room all night. With the idea of a lucid dream, it will be very amazing as she could do things she likes so much. However, she is 12, can she try these tips out and see his it works? 

    • I’ve been able to do this since I was a child, if she’s comfortable with it then maybe she could give it a try. But it would be best to check with your GP.
