Why Should You Sleep With A Knee Brace
A knee injury can take down the toughest people. Common sports injury, ACL surgery or lateral release surgery, will require you to have a knee brace for you to be able to sleep that night.
Knee injuries can be painful, and they usually take quite some time to heal. You might even need to get physical therapy for many months. But besides getting physical therapy, your doctor or surgeon might recommend that you get a knee brace.
It’s at this time that the injured person might question their doctor or surgeon, “Can or should you sleep with a knee brace at night?” Most often, the answer will be yes. Why? Because it will decrease the healing time.
The knee brace will help to keep your leg and joints to stay in place. Many people toss and turn at night; but by having the brace on, you’ll prevent your leg or knee from being jerked around. This will stop the pain thus the disruption of your sleep at night.
What Is A Knee Brace
A knee brace is usually worn for support when you have a pain or a knee injury. There some individuals who wear to keep their knees from getting damaged further, especially when they sleep at night where the legs are prone to tossing and turning. Knee braces are usually made of skin-safe plastic, foam, straps or elastic. The common ones worn at night are the ones with straps.
Knee braces are often recommended by doctors and therapists to encourage recovery while playing sports or sleeping. The braces can come in different sizes and colors, usually, you will find one which works for you.
Benefits Of Wearing A Knee Brace At Night
There are three benefits of wearing a knee brace at night:
Reduce Knee Pain – by wearing a knee brace at night as I said above; your leg won’t get jerked around; this will prevent pain. People who have osteoarthritis in their knees will definitely benefit from a knee brace as it will prevent side to side movement of the joints.
A knee brace will also help them to do exercises of the knee to keep it mobile; this will also help to decrease pain in the knee.
Posture Improvement – a knee brace will help to improve the posture of the knee by keeping it undisturbed as you sleep at night. When the knee bends as we sleep, this tends to aggravate the injury, but the knee brace will prevent that from happening. By sleeping in a comfortable posture with your legs stretched out, you encourage the healing of your knee that much faster.
Structural Support – by providing structural support, a knee brace will help your joints to stay in place. This is especially important when it comes to having knee surgery. It is an active road to recovery as you sleep at night. The better your sleep is, the more healing takes place.
Athletes are known to wear knee braces at night as they know how important it is that their knee maintains the structural support. Many football players are known to wear knee braces, especially when it comes to practicing proper healing etiquette.
How To Sleep With A Knee Brace
Today I’m going to share with you seven different ways that you can sleep with a knee brace. Each of these ways is effective as they will provide the proper support to ensure good healing to you.
1. Use A Good Pillow
By using a right pillow such as a knee pillow or a memory foam pillow will do wonders for you. The reason you’d want to use pillows at night is to elevate your leg; this will help to prevent a situation where one leg puts pressure on the injured leg.
The most efficient way of using pillows is by sleeping on your back. Even wedge pillows are great for this way of sleep. When you buy a knee pillow, just make sure that it is made from memory foam. Memory foam pillows are made for ultra comfort; it doesn’t matter if you’re using them to elevate your leg or putting them between your knees while sleeping on your side.
2. Ensure Knee Brace Stays In Place
Before you go to bed, make sure that you adjust the straps of the knee brace correctly. You don’t want the knee brace limiting the movement of your leg, which could cause further injury. But you also don’t want it so loose that your knee jerks around.
3. Ice Your Knee Before Bedtime
Before going to bed, make sure that you ice your knee. By icing, you need you’ll help to reduce the pain, which will then help you fall asleep faster. Often times during the day as we walk around, this can cause the need to swell.
But when you ice it, this helps to reduce the knee inflammation as well bring swelling down—a much-needed relief before going to sleep.
4. Switch Out The Knee Brace
It’s a good idea to have at least two knee braces. This way, you can switch it out before any sweat starts to gather on your leg. This will prevent your leg from collecting moisture as well as developing any sores.
Another good reason to have two knee braces is you’ll learn which one is better for nighttime and which one provides more daytime relief. That’s if you go for two different types. Some braces can become irritating and uncomfortable to wear for long periods. This usually affects nighttime sleep.
5. Use Lightweight Comforters
By using a lightweight comforter, it’ll make it easier for you to change your sleeping position without your sleeping disturbed. I reviewed some comforters, which are temperature regulated and are lightweight enough for you to sleep when wearing a knee brace at night.
6. Turn On Your White Noise Machine
Sometimes the pain can be overpowering, which prevents sleeping at night. This is an excellent time to have some external noise or music happening, which will help you to not focus on the pain as much. Have a look at my white noise machine review to see if you can find one which will be suited to your needs.
7. Keep The Blood Circulation Moving
By wearing a functional knee brace where your legs are not getting compressed, you will keep the blood moving throughout your leg. This will encourage healing as well; your leg won’t feel constricted.
Types Of Knee Brace For Sleeping
There are two types of braces. The sleeve knee brace, which you can just pull over your leg and strap knee brace. The one that is most often recommended for sleeping at night is the strap knee brace. The sleeve knee brace is better worn during the daytime when your leg is moving around, and the blood will keep pumping on its own without constriction. Another thing about the sleeve knee brace is that it will not prevent your leg from moving around.
The strap knee brace is the one that’s most often used at night. The reason being is it will not constrict blood flow as well you can sleep with the peace of mind knowing that your leg is sturdy and will not move around.
Being a rugby player, knee injuries were common during playtime. There are a few times where I had to buy a knee brace so I could sleep at night. My favorite one is TechWare Pro Knee Brace. This knee brace is adjustable to provide bidirectional support. It is excellent for comfort as well as compression around the kneecap and the tendon areas to help the knee injury to heal. What I like is that it’s great not only for sports injuries, it’s also great for arthritis, bursitis, and tendonitis.
Rugby is a running sport; I remember often having to wear this knee brace not only at night but in the daytime and playing rugby as well. I purchased two just to make sure I had one for both day and nighttime.
This knee brace helps your knee to become functional again. It’s well-made and stays in place, even after walking all day and getting in and out of the car, or bending. It also allows circulation to flow as well as stabilizes your knee so that you don’t have a floating knee cap. Sleeping wise, it was perfect kept my knee in place without sweating or furthering any knee injury.
Some Final Words
Now you need to decide, should you sleep with a knee brace or would you rather risk making a knee injury more inconvenience than it needs to be
