A knee brace will also help them to do exercises of the knee to keep it mobile; this will also help to decrease pain in the knee.

Posture Improvement – a knee brace will help to improve the posture of the knee by keeping it undisturbed as you sleep at night. When the knee bends as we sleep, this tends to aggravate the injury, but the knee brace will prevent that from happening. By sleeping in a comfortable posture with your legs stretched out, you encourage the healing of your knee that much faster.

Structural Support – by providing structural support, a knee brace will help your joints to stay in place. This is especially important when it comes to having knee surgery. It is an active road to recovery as you sleep at night. The better your sleep is, the more healing takes place.

How To Sleep With A Knee Brace

Today I’m going to share with you seven different ways that you can sleep with a knee brace. Each of these ways is effective as they will provide the proper support to ensure good healing to you.

1.     Use A Good Pillow

By using a right pillow such as a knee pillow or a memory foam pillow will do wonders for you. The reason you’d want to use pillows at night is to elevate your leg; this will help to prevent a situation where one leg puts pressure on the injured leg.

The most efficient way of using pillows is by sleeping on your back. Even wedge pillows are great for this way of sleep. When you buy a knee pillow, just make sure that it is made from memory foam. Memory foam pillows are made for ultra comfort; it doesn’t matter if you’re using them to elevate your leg or putting them between your knees while sleeping on your side.

2.     Ensure Knee Brace Stays In Place

Before you go to bed, make sure that you adjust the straps of the knee brace correctly. You don’t want the knee brace limiting the movement of your leg, which could cause further injury. But you also don’t want it so loose that your knee jerks around.

3.     Ice Your Knee Before Bedtime

Before going to bed, make sure that you ice your knee. By icing, you need you’ll help to reduce the pain, which will then help you fall asleep faster. Often times during the day as we walk around, this can cause the need to swell.

But when you ice it, this helps to reduce the knee inflammation as well bring swelling down—a much-needed relief before going to sleep.

4.     Switch Out The Knee Brace

It’s a good idea to have at least two knee braces. This way, you can switch it out before any sweat starts to gather on your leg. This will prevent your leg from collecting moisture as well as developing any sores.

Another good reason to have two knee braces is you’ll learn which one is better for nighttime and which one provides more daytime relief. That’s if you go for two different types. Some braces can become irritating and uncomfortable to wear for long periods. This usually affects nighttime sleep.

Types Of Knee Brace For Sleeping

There are two types of braces. The sleeve knee brace, which you can just pull over your leg and strap knee brace. The one that is most often recommended for sleeping at night is the strap knee brace. The sleeve knee brace is better worn during the daytime when your leg is moving around, and the blood will keep pumping on its own without constriction. Another thing about the sleeve knee brace is that it will not prevent your leg from moving around.

The strap knee brace is the one that’s most often used at night. The reason being is it will not constrict blood flow as well you can sleep with the peace of mind knowing that your leg is sturdy and will not move around.

Being a rugby player, knee injuries were common during playtime. There are a few times where I had to buy a knee brace so I could sleep at night. My favorite one is TechWare Pro Knee Brace.   1. When I used to play sports in the 90s when I was in school, I did end up hurting my knee. I did have to wear a knee brace then, but was told only for when I was active and not to wear it in bed. Needless to say, I was in some pain when I didn’t have it on in bed. I wish your article was around back then. The benefits of having a knee brace on while sleeping in bed are definitely proven these days. If I should ever require a knee brace in the future, I will definitely sleep with it on and follow your steps on how to sleep in a knee brace properly. Have you heard a lot of horror stories of those sleeping without one when they injured their knee?

    • I injured my knee when I didn’t wear a knee brace as suggested by my Doctor. It was painful and slowed down the healing process. I tend to move around a lot when I sleep. 

  2. I have had my doctor tell me the same. I appreciate that you have listed the benefits and I think that you are correct. However, they can be uncomfortable to sleep with and that is something people have to get use to and get over it. I think your suggestions help. The biggest reason I wore mine is I didn’t want to re injure in my sleep. It wasn’t risk I wanted to take.
