3 Top-Rated Natural Latex Mattresses In 2020

Welcome to our top-rated natural latex mattresses review. Today I’m going to breakdown why it’s essential to go for natural latex as well, which mattress will provide the most relief and best sleep.

Top Rated Natural Latex Mattresses

1.     Natural Latex By Luma Sleep

top rated natural latex mattresses - luma latex mattress

The natural latex hybrid mattress by Luma Sleep has a comfort layer that comes from Talalay latex, and the support comes from pocketed coils and contains a high-density polyfoam base layer. The cover is made from Tencel Lyocell.

This mattress is 14″ thick. It has an excellent interchangeable system to let you decide what type of firmness you want, and it will adapt to your sleeping positions. The Tencel fabric feels smooth and soft next to the skin.

It has excellent support for the spine as well as the back. What you might also appreciate is that it also has limited motion transfer. If you have a partner who climbs late into bed, you’ll not be disturbed. Waking up from a deep sleep can be pretty disturbing and might even keep people up. This mattress prevents that from happening

For people who are hot sleepers, they will appreciate that the mattress is breathable and provides extra comfort during hot weather.

When you receive the mattress, there will be some off-gassing. Latex mattresses odor isn’t as strong as synthetic foam mattresses. Within 24 to 48 hours, the smell will fade away. By leaving the mattress alone for a day or two, your mattress will also expand full capacity.

When it comes to getting a good mattress, having right edge support can make all the difference in how your mattress reacts when you sit on it. Sinking immediately means not having the best support as well; the subconscious thought may be that you might roll off the bed. But with this mattress, you’ll not have to worry about that.

Why? Because the Luma mattress has pocketed coils that fix this issue. This helps to give the mattress the edge support you need as you sleep.

One of the top features of the Luma mattress is that they are CertiPUR-US certified. The mattress is constructed from organic material. You don’t have to worry about formaldehyde, mercury, lead, or any other heavy metals.

Luma offers you a 100 nights sleep trial for this. If for any reason you are unsatisfied, you can ask for a refund from the manufacturer. Not only will the manufacturer refund your money, but they will also come to pick up the mattress. The only thing you’ll have to ensure is that the mattress is in good condition.

You will also get a 10-year warranty for this, and the warranty is only applicable if you use it on a proper foundation system. If your mattress is defective, you will not be responsible for charges related to repair or replacement.

2.     Dunlop Latex Mattress By Idle Sleep

top rated natural latex mattresses - idle sleep latex mattress

The latex mattress by Idle Sleep can be flipped to use either side. Each side of the mattress has a different level of firmness. Because you can use different sides of the bed, it will last you a lot longer than a standard mattress.

Going back to the two different levels of firmness, it will be up to you to decide how you want it. You can either have two firms sides, or to medium sides, or one of each. You are customizing your own mattress, how neat is that?

In the core of the mattress are 8” layer of pocketed coils. The coils act as a support system for the person who sleeps on it, as well the coils help to keep the mattress supportive, so you don’t wake up in pain. Although they are one unit, the coils move independently of each other; this will help to isolate motion.

The coils on both sides of the mattress are covered by Dunlop latex, which is 100% pure GOLS certified. The quilted cover on top is made of natural wool. The wool helps to create a soft pillow top like feeling. But added into the cover is organic cotton, which is non-hypoallergenic.

There is no weird smell coming from the mattress itself. As you lay down on the mattress, you’ll notice that it feels very soft due to the responsive foam on top. Because it is so responsive, you’ll be able to change your sleep position without any difficulty naturally.

Altogether the mattress is 14” total thickness; this means that people who are a bit on the heavier side can also use the mattress. The coils in the latex foam together create a durable material, which is another reason the mattress will last a long time.

Hot sleepers will enjoy this mattress because it has breathing capabilities, which means it stays more to the cooler side. Couples will enjoy this mattress because of the motion transfer, which gets isolated; this means if your bed partner climbs later into bed, your sleep will not be disturbed.

It also has good edge support. The edge support will help you sleep more soundly at night, knowing there is a buffer on each side, which will prevent you from falling off the bed.

It will take about 7 to 18 business days for you to receive this mattress. Idle Sleep also has financing options, which means you can take 6 to 12 months to pay it off. It’s an American made product and comes with a lifetime warranty. You also have 18 months to make up your mind without any undue pressure.

3.     Botanical Bliss Latex Mattress By PlushBeds

top rated natural latex mattresses - botanical bliss latex mattress

The Botanical Bliss latex mattress is not just comfortable, but it also is environmentally friendly. This mattress is made for heavier sleepers. It comes in three different thickness options being 9, 10, and 12”.

The latex mattress is made from three natural Dunlop latex layers. The cover on it is organic cotton, and the comfort layers are made of wool. Inside of the mattress to support you while you sleep, it features organic Dunlop latex.

It comes in two different firmness options being medium and firm. The neat thing here is that heavier sleepers will be able to adjust the firmness level simply by changing the order of the three latex layers.

This mattress will last longer than the standard mattress. Hot sleepers will enjoy the mattress because it sleeps to the cool side as do most latex mattresses. For people who have pain, they will enjoy the mattress because it helps to relieve pain pressure points. By relieving pain pressure points, you can wake up refreshed and rejuvenated.

Another great thing about this mattress is that it does have excellent isolation of motion transfer. It also is noiseless; when your sleeping and someone decides to come into bed later, your sleep will remain undisturbed.

There is no off-gassing from this mattress. The only smell that you’ll notice is a very light smell from latex and wool. It has excellent edge support for those who need to know that they are getting closer to the edge of the bed. The responsive latex foam is excellent for a couple who like to get frisky in bed.

PlushBeds offers free delivery to anywhere in the US. You will also get a 100-night sleep trial, and a 25-year warranty backs the mattress. Not a bad deal for what you’re paying for this mattress.

Benefits Of Getting A Natural Latex Mattress

One of the main benefits of sleeping on a natural latex mattress is that your body temperature will be regulated. If you are a hot sleeper, then staying cool becomes ultra essential. But what I really like is that in the winter, you’ll be nice and snug on this mattress.

Sleeping cool isn’t one of the only benefits of  mattress; there are others as well:

  • Natural latex means hypoallergenic
  • Provides excellent body support
  • No funny odor or smell
  • Promotes pain relief
  • 100% recyclable
  • Motion isolation
  • Encourages spinal alignment
  • Eco friendly
  • Phenomenal air circulation
  • Durable and long-lasting

Natural Latex Mattress Buyer’s Guide

·       Always Go With Natural Latex

Since all latex is not created equal, you’ll need to pay special attention to the type of mattress you are buying. There’s synthetic latex and natural latex. Synthetic latex can come with off-gassing and not last as long as a natural latex mattress would.

When it comes to making natural latex, it is made in liquid form by hand. There are two different types of latex forms one being Dunlop and the other Talalay. The Dunlop is the natural latex while Talalay, which is a newer form of latex which comes from a synthetic version.

The mattresses we reviewed are all-natural latex. Natural latex also is more responsive as well as helps to isolate motion transfer and resists from packing down. Synthetic latex does not offer that. Natural latex also is hypoallergenic has anti-dust mite, anti-mold, and anti-mildew qualities.

·       Ensure that the covers are breathable

What you might want to look at here is to make sure that the cover is a wool blend with organic cotton. You don’t want the covering to be thick, as this will prevent you from having close contact with the natural latex mattress. The very reason you purchased the mattress.

·       Purchase from a well-known company

When you buy from a well-known company, you’ll avoid the pitfalls that many fall into when they purchase from a company that is not well known or is limited to how many reviews it has. Make sure that you read reviews before you make your decision. Even if they are third-party. Believe me; you’ll avoid the many headaches people experience when they find that they spent quite a bit of money, but the mattress is not living up to the manufacturer’s hype.

·       What kind of the trial Period Does the manufacturer offer

60 days is a preferable trial, but if you can get a mattress from a company that offers a longer trial period without any undue pressure, you’ll be better off. I’ve seen people purchase a product and then find out that there’s only a 30 day trial period. This doesn’t even give them the time to learn about the product benefits or if it’s even for them.

·       Long term warranty

Most natural latex mattresses come with a 10+ year warranty. If it’s anything less than 10 years, then questions arise as to why the manufacturer is offering a minimal warranty. The longer the warranty, the more you know that the manufacturer has faith in their product, which helps to instill faith in you that the mattress will last you for a while.

What Type Of Foundation Should You Use With The Latex Mattress

The best foundation for a latex mattress like memory foam mattress is platform bed frames. You can use a box spring, but it would have to be one that is right and has very little give. Platform bed frames have no give and usually have an outside around edge support. This will help to keep the mattress form spreading out.

How To Clean A Natural Latex Mattress

Now that we discussed how to buy the proper mattress, you will also need to know how to clean your natural latex mattress. You can use items that you already have at home to do the job.

Latex mattresses like other mattresses can get stained as well odors can cling to the mattress too. You want to dry vacuum your mattress at least once a month. Even though natural latex mattresses are known to be resistant to dust mites, but over time it can still collect skin flakes or pet dander. Unless you vacuum, you may end up sleeping in something that will cause allergies.

At least once a year, consider taking your mattress outside and beat it with the brush so you can loosen up the dust. Once this is done, you can do another vacuum run to make sure that you collect all the dust. Remember to keep your latex mattress out of direct sunlight, as this can damage it.

When you want to remove stains, just use warm water and a little bit of dish detergent. The sooner you act on the stain, the easier they will come out. After 72 hours, stains can become permanent, which may attract mildew.

Remember to be sparse with the water that you’re using to clean your bed. If you do use water, make sure to press or blot to lift out all the water. Let your mattress fully dry before you prepare it for use again. You can also use baking soda to remove odors from your mattress. What you’ll need to do is sprinkle the baking soda where the odors are, leave it for a few hours, and then vacuum it up.

Taking proper care of your mattress will have it last a long time for your enjoyment and sleeping needs.

  2. Hi Eric,

I am really grateful for your comparison natural latex mattresses. The guide you posted was also very helpful, it really helps with making a better decision on which mattress to choose.

I’ve only recently discovered how bad an old mattress can be for your back and so I have found myself here on choosing a more permanent solution, namely a latex mattress.

Right now my personal favourite is the Dunlop Latex Mattress by Idle Sleep. It fits with what I want.

  3. Hi there! Thank you for providing an in depth review on the best natural latex mattresses. I probably should have done more research when I was mattress shopping.

I am fascinated by the different firmness options in the same mattress!

I like that the mattress is designed to keep you cool as we sleep. In the summer it can get hot in the house, and this mattress would help me stay cool!

  4. I read your article with great interest as a good nights sleep is one of the components for good health. You did such a good job with your reviews it is difficult to make a decision. They all have good points about them. However, if I would have to remove one from the mix it would be the Botanical  Bliss one. The reason doesn’t have anything to do with the mattress itself but the fact that it is so high from the floor as shown in the picture. One would need a foot stool to get into the bed with ease. I am assuming that the other two are not as high.

When you talked about all the mattresses providing motion isolation between the couple in bed, it brought back memories of a waterbed mattress we had a long time ago. That was the direct opposite of motion isolation. It was almost comical the way it swayed around! It was like being on a row boat lol.

If I were to choose one of these it would be the Dunlop Latex mattress that could be configured for two different firmness levels. And the fact that it could be reversed for longer life was a plus.

What kind of box springs would be required for these mattresses? Could one use the existing bed box springs satisfactorily?

I appreciated the cleaning details you provided. There is one aspect about the cleaning that concerns me. You mentioned that it is best to take the mattress outdoors once a year to beat it down. Aren’t they heavy? From my experience it takes at least two people to do that. Are there such a thing as wheels that can be attached to the edges of the mattresses for assisting moving them outdoors? This becomes even more of a problem if the bedroom is on an upper floor. The store usually delivers and installs the mattress. I imagine that most people do not move the mattress away from the room unless they are moving house.

A final note. I had no idea how important a role latex played in the construction of a mattress. Such as providing the means to regulate temperature.

Thanks for such an interesting review that makes it very helpful in the decision making process. Decisions, decisions, decisions!

    • Thank you for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. The Botanical Bliss comes in three different height sizes which are 9, 10, and 12″, adding a box spring would definitely make it very high, but that depends on the height of the box spring.

Most people use platform foundations. They make it so you don’t need a box spring, which would also bring down the height of the bed.

I agree these mattresses are heavier than the usual ones, but vacuuming once a year is only a recommendation, not a necessity. Even if you were to dry vacuum it once a month inside the room, that would be okay as well. The choice you are thinking about is a good one.

Happy mattress buying and stay safe!

  5. Oh, my. These all sound amazing. I’m sleeping on an old futon mattress at the moment, and it’s . . . well, it’s not the greatest. But this too shall pass.

I must admit, I learned something new reading your post: I did not know there was such a thing as natural latex. I thought all latex was synthetic. So I was pleasantly surprised to learn that I could have a mattress made from natural materials that was NOT a futon mattress.

And I am particularly pleased to see that they have such long  warranties. This does give me much more confidence in the product. And now to decide which one to bring home and cozy up to . . .

Thanks for the detailed review. These make shopping so much easier.

    Cheers
